Source: forthmagazine - Like a hologram, you have to approach Los Angeles from just the right angle, or it appears to be a flimsy nothingness. This is why housing prices here never really hit bottom; if real estate is all about location, and that location exists only in your mind, then Los Angeles is perpetually located in the hottest market. So where is here, in a city based on imagination? If you accidentally fall asleep and forget to project your own reality, does it all vanish overnight?
People who fail to seek out their own reality, and wait for it to be handed to them in the form of a ready-made community, will not find Los Angeles to their liking. A city of crazed iconoclasts who crave light and heat, LA has often been derided for its lack of a center, but then again, that presupposes that the culture of LA exists in a basic three dimensional universe, where a center is possible, or even desirable. This city tilts on every available axis, into territories that may never be found again. Filmmakers show up and document the weirdness.
Architects create giddy glass and concrete interpretations of socioeconomic trends. Writers hit the wall and spew out novels filled with stars, exclamation points, and eerie parentheticals.
And the ordinary folks, the ones who value trust, order, and commitment, sit in hellish amounts of traffic.
You can’t expect to move in LA without some form of resistance. Then again, you should never limit yourself to moving in a straight line. If you’ve got the stomach for it, this city will allow you to reach out and touch things you only thought were rumors. In an age where mythos is largely confined to children’s books, Los Angeles is one of the last true frontiers—if you can catch it from the right angle.
