You know how much I love to hike and run around LA. Running up a ridge just below the beloved Hollywood Sign before sunset this afternoon, I noticed a lizard's newly shed skin on the path - of course I instantly reflected upon the symbolism - the shedding of outmoded skins. Enjoying the walk back down, my attention was focused on the welcoming trees and sky around me when I came within inches of stepping on a friendly rattler. The serpent was peacefully crossing the path when I leapt up and over it, just in time. Naturally, I came home and opened Animal Speak by Ted Andrews to decipher the message being delivered to me:
Because it shed its skin, the snake has long been a symbol of death and rebirth. It sheds its skin as it outgrows the old. This death and rebirth cycle is part of what snake represents. It has ties and significance to the ancient alchemists and their symbolic transmutation of lead into gold. This is associated with higher wisdom that comes with the passing of time...
