Hollywood Celebrates Walk of Fame's 50th With All-Day Festival

Source: LAist - No matter how many years you've lived in Los Angeles, it's hard not to look down at the shoe-scuffed but sparkling star-studded sidewalks of Hollywood to see which celebrity you're walking all over. This coming weekend the Hollywood Walk of Fame's world-famous paving stones hit a major milestone--their 50th anniversary--and everyone is invited to celebrate.

The day long festival is Hollywood’s “open house” honoring the Walk of Fame with entertainment, tours and events at four key locations - Hollywood & Highland Center including the TV Guide Studio, Egyptian Theatre, Capitol Records and the Ricardo Montalbán Theatre - showcasing the five categories of stars: live theatre, motion picture, television, recording, and radio, and the more than 2,400 stars immortalized on the walk.

The day kicks off with an American Indian Blessing, followed by the ceremony for legendary musician Louis Prima's star. Events during the day will give people a chance to play soccer on the roof of the Montalban Theatre, tour the historic Egyptian, peek inside Studio A inside the Capitol Records building, and catch a variety of screenings and live performances. To Ride and Dream of Riding

By Michael Owen - Some Saturday morning, fate might find you in Ventura County traveling through lowlands empty and silent except for mingled strings of cyclists who call out "On your left" as they pass each other on the road. These riders will look as weary and depleted as the afterthought of a marine weather layer deposited over their heads or the distant sun behind it, but they'll move with a sure sense of heading. They'll know they are close to the end.

For a couple more hours, these cyclists will still pause at a handful of stops just off the road, each announced one mile ahead on a folding white sign like you'd see on a Hollywood sidewalk. (The AIDS/LifeCycle rest-stop sandwich board is letter A in a private alphabet of pointers and warnings posted on stop signs and exit signs from the San Francisco peninsula to Westwood. You probably wouldn't notice unless you're supposed to.) They'll park their bikes and drink electrolyte drinks, or water, or electrolyte drinks mixed with water. They'll stretch sore necks and upper backs and they'll reapply their sunblock. They'll snack on pretzels, Goldfish crackers, bananas, oranges, ClifBars, cereal bars, granola bars, graham cracker sandwiches, peanuts, sunflower seeds, trail mixes, raisins, fruit snacks and Oreos. They'll take pictures.

They will not, tonight, arrive in a fairgrounds or a park to raise their tents and shower in trucks. They will not swarm mystically to the one working electrical outlet in camp, at the foot of a gazebo, to form a chain of power strips and plug in their cellphones. They will not show their wristband in the dinner line. Non-vegetarians will not try -- in vain -- to sneak vegetarian meals. The head of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center, Lorri Jean, will not bound onto the stage to warble "HELLO RIDERS!" and then "HELLO ROADIES!" into the microphone during the dinner program. "Glee" cast members will not appear on video in a message of support. The riders will not prepare their headdresses, or regular dresses, or full-size E.T. dolls, for the next day's ride. They will not fall asleep in a blooming midnight garden of eccentric snores.

Ojai's Libbey Bowl: June 10 to 13

Source: LA Times - Don’t let the quaint setting fool you. From June 10 to 13, Ojai’s Libbey Bowl—a simple band shell with seating for a scant 1,400 listeners on old wooden benches and a lawn—will be the venue for distinguished musicians from all over the world. They’ll be showcasing new, classic and seldom heard works, joining in a legacy that stretches back 64 years and includes Aaron Copland, Igor Stravinsky, John Adams, James Levine, Pierre Boulez, Ravi Shankar, Sir Simon Rattle, Eric Dolphy, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Michael Tilson Thomas.

What’s so special about the event? Artistic director Thomas W. Morris sees it as 360-degree immersion. “You’re in this small town. You’ve just heard a concert. You go into a coffee shop, where you see audience members, or even the artists, and overhear people debating what was just performed...Music should provoke a reaction. It’s perfectly acceptable for you to like something. It’s also acceptable for you not to like something.”

Music director George Benjamin—who has worked with Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta, Philharmonia and the Berlin Philharmonic and Royal Concertgebouw orchestras—has tapped his connections as a conductor, composer, teacher and performer to bring new and revered artists to the festival.

This year’s program of groundbreaking compositions, clever programming juxtapositions and never-before-performed works include the female trio Wildcat Viols doing Henry Purcell’s Fantasias for the Viols and, in a collision of classical and rock, Frank Zappa’s favorite composer, Edgard Varèse, taking turns with Zappa’s “Adventures of Greggery Peccary” and The Yellow Shark, with listeners feeling the impact of industrial-strength sound equipment—a sound board with 80 channels—to clarify and balance Zappa’s dense music.

Benjamin himself improvises on piano to the silent film Vampyr at the Ojai Theatre. And then there’s the West Coast premiere of his lauded 35-minute chamber opera, Into the Little Hill, performed by 15 musicians, with soprano Anu Komsi and contralto Hilary Summers playing both narrators and all the characters—crow, minister, wife, child and Pied Piper.

Notable as well are the classical-masterpiece arrangements by Stravinsky, Olivier Messiaen, Boulez, Györgyi Ligeti and Arnold Schoenberg’s spin on Johann Strauss. Listeners can learn about motivation and meaning during preconcert talks at the local tennis courts, and the Matilija Auditorium is hosting symposiums on being a musician in the 21st century, a Zappa overview and a conversation with music director Benjamin.

After the notes are played, let the natural beauty of the town and its environs take over. Ojai’s annual music festival is a feast for all your senses.

L.A.'s Homeless Get Backpack 'Survival Kits'

By: Molly Hennessy-Fiske - The Giving Spirit, a nonprofit, distributes 1,000 knapsacks of food and essentials. Saturday, with a special effort to reach homeless women and children.

Due in roughly four months, Berry survives by selling incense on the Venice boardwalk.

When she heard someone was giving away backpacks full of food and other supplies at the Westminster dog park on Saturday, she was among the first to show up.

The sturdy black backpacks, which volunteers from the Giving Spirit like to call "survival kits," contain about three dozen items essential to surviving the streets in Los Angeles County, including a baseball cap, socks, soap, sunglasses, a toothbrush, toothpaste, a hairbrush, sunscreen, lotion, a first aid kit, deodorant and bottled water.

About 225 volunteers packed and distributed 350 backpacks on foot in Venice, downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, North Hollywood and Culver City on Saturday. They delivered about 650 additional backpacks to seven local homeless outreach groups.

Volunteers made a special effort to reach women and children, distributing about 15 diaper bags full of feminine napkins, sippy cups, diapers, diaper-rash cream, baby wipes, baby sun block, children's vitamins, formula and bottles. In Venice, they partnered with Stand Up For Kids, a Los Angeles nonprofit that serves homeless youth.

At the dog park, Berry claimed a backpack and a free bag lunch and sat down to eat in the shade. She said life on the streets can be hard for a woman, especially one struggling with morning sickness. But she is happy about becoming a mother. She knows she is having a girl and has already picked out a name: Jessi Lynn. Things have been better since she and her husband recently got an old RV to sleep in, she said, although police often rouse them from local parking lots.

Her young friends, who also claimed backpacks, said they have tried to find work, but even minimum-wage employers are looking for workers with more experience. Miguel Pineda, 22, was laid off from his job managing a Starbucks about nine months ago and has been homeless — or "traveling," as he says — ever since.

"There's no work out there for a younger person," said Donovan Hage, 19.

The Giving Spirit is a nondenominational, all-volunteer, Los Angeles-based nonprofit. Since Brentwood entrepreneur Tom Bagamane founded the group in 1999, he said, 5,000 volunteers have distributed about 11,000 bags to Los Angeles County's homeless.

Iranian-Americans in L.A.

Source: UCLA - June 6, 2010 to August 22, 2010 -- From October 2009 through January 2010, four documentary photographers—Farhad Parsa, Arash Saedinia, Parisa Taghizadeh, and Ramin Talaie—focused their lenses on second-generation Iranian-Americans of Los Angeles, the world’s largest population of expatriate Iranians. Document: Iranian-Americans in Los Angeles—on view at the Fowler Museum from June 6–Aug. 22, 2010—offers a selection of images by each of these photographers which consider the everyday lives of their subjects. The exhibition also addresses the processes of documentation and how they relate to the photographers’ understandings of their own hyphenated Iranian identities.

The photographs capture the varied lives and interests of LA’s Iranian-American community—from toddlers at play to an acupuncturist in the office of her Los Feliz practice, from a young man break dancing to a young woman at prayer. There are also a few recognizable figures such as public intellectual Reza Aslan and comedian Maz Jobrani.

"In cultivating this collaborative project, I wanted to examine documentation as a representational process by offering four Iranian-American photographers' perspectives on who we are, stressing the importance of including multiple voices in documenting our own Los Angeles communities," says guest curator Amy Malek.

About the Photographers:

Farhad Parsa received a BFA in Photography and Film Production from the California College of Art in 2000. In 2007 he released his first photography book, Cue the Strings, filled with ten years of photographs exploring the people and events that shaped his life. Also in 2007, he began 1234 NYC, a ten-year project focusing on forty New Yorkers, including students, small business owners, and workers in creative industries.

Arash Saedinia was born in Esfahan and raised in Los Angeles. He earned a bachelor's degree in Peace and Conflict Studies and Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley, a master's degree in English at California State University, Northridge, and a law degree from Harvard University. He is an artist and educator.

Parisa Taghizadeh is a freelance photographer based in Los Angeles. She grew up in London where she completed a BA Hons degree in Fine Art and went on to work in film and television. She has worked as a photographer for arts organizations such as Artangel and the Serpentine Gallery, as well as on numerous films and documentaries including Michael Winterbottom's, In this World. Taghizadeh’s work deals with personal and cultural identity, such as in Make-Up, Iran, a long-term project dealing with women living in Iran and their relationship to make-up and its rituals. She is also working on Mother, a series of portraits of mothers without their children.

Ramin Talaie is a documentary photojournalist whose work ranges from everyday portraiture in the streets of New York to AIDS-infected and chemical-dependant prisoners in a dilapidated treatment facility in Tehran. Talaie has covered various presidential campaigns including the 2008 presidential election of Barack Obama and the 2009 contested elections in Iran, which precipitated deadly protests and demonstrations. He is the founding editor of Document Iran Images, a news and stock photo agency based in New York City.

More Information: Document: Iranian-Americans in Los Angeles has been organized by Amy Malek, UCLA Anthropology Ph.D candidate, with Susan Slyomovics, faculty advisor, under the auspices of the G.E. von Grunebaum Center for Near Eastern Studies (CNES) at UCLA and through generous funding from the UCLA Council on Research (COR), UCLA Center for Community Partnerships (CCP), the Farhang Foundation, and CNES. The exhibition will be on view in the Goldenberg Galleria.

The Fowler Museum at UCLA is one of the country’s most respected institutions devoted to exploring the arts and cultures of Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and the Americas. The Fowler is open Wednesdays through Sundays, from noon to 5 p.m.; and on Thursdays, from noon until 8 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. A panel of scholars will discuss issues relating to the Iranian diaspora and visual anthropology. Next, exhibition curator Amy Malek is joined by the four documentary photographers whose work is featured in the exhibition—Farhad Parsa, Arash Saedinia, Parisa Taghizadeh, and Ramin Talaie—who will discuss their experiences documenting the everyday lives of second-generation Iranian Americans in Los Angeles. Center for Sacred Studies Co-founder and Spiritual Director, Jyoti is an internationally renowned spiritual advisor and teacher of earth based ways of prayer. Her background includes education in cross-cultural spiritual practices, social services program development, training at the Jung Institute in Switzerland, and extensive international travel. She has devoted her life to bringing unity to the planet, by facilitating the development of alliances between individuals who are the guardians of indigenous culture and traditional Medicine ways. She and the CSS staff convened the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers and continue to organize and raise funds for the Grandmother's global work for world peace and unity. Jyoti has been named by the Grandmother's Council as their Traveling Ambassador Charged with the Mission.

A Global Movement for World Peace and Unity inspired and led by the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers. Jyoti will share the story of the vision that brought the grandmothers together and how that vision continues to inspire others globally to stand up for the Earth initiating sustainable projects and actions in communities around the world.

L.A. Club Breathes Life Into Music

By STEVE CHAGOLLAN - Just west of L.A.'s Miracle Mile, the restaurant/nightclub Life on Wilshire hosts a weekly Monday night showcase of mostly unsigned acts that's been slowly gathering steam over the past year and a half.

Westsiders with a taste for live music who dread penetrating the rock-club bottleneck of the Strip, the alt-pop lounges of Silver Lake and Echo Park, or downtown's urban hipster zone might view this almost forlorn stretch of Wilshire Boulevard as an oasis of easy access and plentiful parking.

Organized by musicians John Jones and Kim Crain via jjsongsalon.com, Monday Music Night , which they have never advertised, attracts a motley crew of wannabes, has-beens, industryites and some surprisingly compelling talent, considering there's no cover. The performers span the spectrum from goth-country siren Lynda Kay, with her towering beehive and David Lynchian theatrics, to the stark, confessional songs of Caroline Waters.

Last Monday was particularly notable, with the bands Piel and Kid Theodore seemingly ready for cameos in CW shows such as "Gossip Girl" and "90210" or any music supervisor on the lookout for punchy pop and youthful magnetism.

L.A.-based Piel -- whose lead singer, Chicago transplant Tiki Lewis, touts supermodel looks and a sinewy voice that ranges from a whisper to a scream -- recalls bands like Blondie, which it cites as an influence, and the late, great Sugarcubes, with its atmospheric, neo-new wave sonic assault.

Kid Theodore, which has appeared at SXSW and was chosen by Billboard in 2008 as the No. 1 indie band in the western U.S., has been compared to the Cold War Kids. The band's infectious, hook-laden licks had the people at Life bouncing in front of the stage.

Crain and Jones, a Grammy-winning producer who has collaborated with such artists as Celine Dion and Duran Duran, curate the weekly affair based on their extensive contacts in the biz, from in-demand guitarists such as Yogi Lonich (Buckcherry, Chris Cornell, Seal) and Brian Ray (Paul McCartney) to drummer Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty). Often they'll get tips from fellow musicians on tour about opening acts, or somebody will pass them a demo. There's no science to the booking, with the pair often flying by the seat of their pants to fill the bill at the 11th hour.

Crain is also a stylist in her day job for well-known rock 'n' roll couturier J. Gerard, who designs clothes for Prince, Cher and Rihanna. So the people who frequent Gerard's Melrose Avenue boutique might also help feed the talent pipeline.

"We're trying to support original music in Los Angeles," Crain says. "We call (Monday Night Music) a 'musicians' refuge' because people meet there and get hooked up with other pros for recordings and tours."

Whether Jones, Crain & Co. can keep it intimate -- and free -- is another matter. Says Crain: "We want to make it like the (Hollywood's) Hotel Cafe -- a special place."

Jack Johnson Fans Receive Free Concert Tickets For Beach Clean Up

Source: ecorazzi - On May 24, Jack Johnson will take over the Santa Monica Pier to promote the release of his latest album To The Sea and raise awareness for the environmental organization Heal The Bay. Previously, free concert tickets were up for grabs for the first 2000 people to commit to a 2-hour beach cleanup on May 22.

Those who missed out on the volunteer signup can still win tickets through May 23 by following @jackjohnson and @brushfire on Twitter. Additionally, Johnson encourages fans to join Heal the Bay in their efforts to keep California beaches free of garbage by participating in the organization’s monthly cleanup programs.

To The Sea, which will be released on June 1, was recorded at the Mango Tree in Hawaii and the Solar Powered Plastic Plant in Los Angeles—both solar-powered studios. The Santa Monica Pier concert kicks off Johnson’s summer tour. As with the 2008 tour, Jack Johnson will once again donate 100% of his 2010 tour profits to charity.
