Location: Olandar, Home of Carla and Leigh McCloskey in Malibu, CA
A premier LA screening of the documentary film about "Maya Variations" - an exciting multi-media work by composer Yuval Ron. The multi-disciplinary performance documented in this film contrasts the ancient Mayan civilization and its connection to nature, with our contemporary industrialized civilization and its reliance on technology.
Commissioned by Lauren Bon for Farm Lab in 2007, the work features the amazing three hundred foot long "Earth Harp", which is strung in such a way, it envelops the performance space and audience within the body of the instrument.
The filmed performance showcases the Earth Harp's creator William Close, Armenian woodwind master Yeghish Manukyan, and an experimental art film by director David Lebrun creating a fascinating and vivid film portrayal of Mayan culture and history.
This artistic film is accompanied by composer Yuval Ron's electronically triggered musical soundscapes, and takes the audience on an inspiring and mesmerizing journey into the Mayan world in search of hope for our contemporary urban society.
Followed by discussion with the work creator and composer Yuval Ron and his collaborator, film director David Lebrun.
